Students will be able to
• evaluate whether an environment is successful in achieving a desired effect, based on the elements and principles of design.
• use colour theory to select suitable colour schemes for clients; and describe the effects created by colour and colour interactions, including our physiological, psychological, and cultural responses to colour.
• use the steps of the design process to define a project, describe client characteristics, specify requirements based on client needs, analyze the existing environment, establish priorities, research options, choose products, and create ideal solutions.
• analyze functional requirements for furnishings based on needs and preferences; divide rooms into functional zones; select furniture, and coordinate it with existing finishes; plan furniture layouts and traffic patterns.
• identify major design styles, create a look, and mix different styles together.
• conduct client interviews; and describe how to build relationships with clients, tradespeople, and suppliers, developing rapport, recording information, and maintaining ongoing communication.
• describe the sources, types, characteristics, and effects of light on people and on colour; use basic lighting techniques to determine location of lighting and general style of fixture to create desired effects.

• optimize kitchen layouts; assess the durability, maintenance, aesthetic and physical properties of different kitchen and bathroom finishes (counters, flooring, cabinetry) and make the best choices for functionality and style, given client preferences and practical considerations.
• incorporate art and accessories, exploring fresh design ideas for displaying collections; use diverse objects to provide practical and emotional support to clients, creating environments that are unique and that truly reflect the client.
